Beth Orton returns with her first album in four years with
Comfort of Strangers. She's eschewed the electronic sounds and full instrumentation of her previous releases to come back to a simpler musical style. Working with producer Jim O'Rourke (Stereolab, Sonic Youth, Wilco), who also provided drums and bass to the album,
Comfort of Strangers is a more straightforward sound without being minimalist. Using her lyrics, sultry voice, and gently textured instrumentation, Beth Orton lets the songs speak for themselves instead of trying to overwhelm the listener with sound. This should be Beth Orton drawing on the talents and strengths that launched her career in the first place.
CD released February 7, 2006.
