American V: A Hundred Highways is Johnny Cash's final album. The songs were written and the vocal tracks were put down before his death in 2003, and the instrumentation then carefully added by musicians who had performed with Johnny Cash in the past. The result is the quintessential Man in Black, that unmistakable gruff voice that exudes control and pathos and has defined his career. The songs reflect his mood dealing with the death of his wife, June Carter Cash, and his own failing health. It's a stark album that puts the final note on a glorious career.
CD released July 4, 2006.
