Following his success with
Motown and
Motown Two, Michael McDonald returns his smooth vocals back to soul music.
Soul Speak can be thought of as a sequel to those earlier albums, but think of it as more soul than Motown. He includes one new track here, "Getting Over You," but the rest are covers of songs by Jackie Wilson, Bob Marley, Stevie Wonder, Teddy Pendergrass, Van Morrison and others. Michael McDonald's key to success is his voice and he maximizes its groove with this choice of music. All Music says, "Indeed, it could be argued that of his albums of the new millennium, Soul Speak comes the closest to capturing the sound and feel of Michael McDonald at his peak, all without ever sounding like a conscious re-creation of that time."
CD released March 11, 2008.
