Ruby's Torch, Nanci Griffith puts together an album of torch songs, with the difference being that with the exception of "In the Wee Small Hours of the Morning," these aren't traditional torch songs. Instead she covers songs from other artists in the torch song style. These include three songs by Tom Waits and another by Jimmy Webb, among others. Backed by a 13-piece string section, Nanci Griffith brings her gentle, folksy voice to her own versions of these songs. Hal Horowitz at amazon.com says, "This lush, reflective work is a wonderful vehicle for Griffth's yearning, supple voice. It shows her to be as commanding a torch-song interpreter as a guitar-strumming roots veteran, and points the way for future projects in this vein."
