Never one to either follow convention or go quietly into the night, Neil Young's prolific career adds another new album,
Chrome Dreams II, which is a sequel to an unreleased 1977 album. Yet this album is not exactly a sequel, bringing with it a variety of sounds that Neil Young has perfected over the years. The first three songs perhaps illustrate this best, with "Beautiful Bluebird" leading off with a sound akin to his bluesy, acoustic pieces. "Boxcar" follows with more of a groove sound, before Neil Young launches into the 18-minute, intense rock song, "Ordinary People."
Chrome Dreams II is probably both surprising and predictable, from an artist who seems to like it that way. Drowned in Sound says, "It’s a well-rounded album that defies the notion of a man being allowed to rock himself to sleep on the porch of rock’s sappy dotage. It offers vitality, compassion, sharpness and vehemence where those younger and more feted around him lack it."
CD released October 23, 2007.
